What Stump Grinding Does

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to break the visible stump into small wood fragments. The stump is taken below the surrounding ground level, removing the main obstruction without excavating the entire root system.

Grinding is often suitable where the goal is to remove a raised stump, improve the appearance of a lawn or make the surface easier to reinstate. The depth and final treatment can be discussed in relation to turfing, planting and the condition of the surrounding ground.

When Complete Root Removal Is Needed

Complete root removal is a more extensive process. The stump and associated root system are excavated and extracted rather than ground in place. It may be appropriate where roots conflict with planned construction, paving, drainage, new planting or a change in the layout of the garden.

Clearing decaying material may also remove a damp habitat used by certain insects and fungi, although not every old stump presents a pest problem.
